As we previously reported, New Mexico Gov. unilateral decision to “issue a 30-day ban on the open & concealed carrying of guns in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County” in response to recent acts of deadly gun violence against children has been met with fierce resistance from Republicans, law enforcement officials in the state and beyond, and even some Democrats.
A gun-rights group filed a suit, but there will be more in the coming weeks.
Grisham is a Democrat in her second term of governor and appeared on CNN to respond to the huge backlash. She probably expected a friendly exchange with a majority of agreement about her declaration. CNN and most liberal media outlets have been generally hostile to gun rights activists and their arguments. It’s understandable that Grisham thought she would be treated with kid gloves.
It’s not true.
Poppy Harlow, a reporter for ABC News, repeatedly questioned Grisham about her stance on the issue and whether she believed she had the authority to temporarily ban gun rights. Unsurprisingly the governor did not have any good answers to Harlow’s hypotheticals and questions.

“We also have, Governor, the Constitution … and you’re an attorney. Do you think you’re on solid constitutional ground?”

“You just heard from the sheriff. He joins the attorney general and others who say they won’t enforce [a unilateral gun ban]. It’s unconstitutional. Why do it if it can’t be enforced?”

“What if a Republican governor of a state declares a health emergency and unilaterally outlaws abortion in that state, where the legislature has not done so by statute — following your logic, would that also be sound?”
New Mexico Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham: No

In this extended video, Gov. Grisham blamed gun violence on the NRA and police in her state.

If you are a gun control advocate and have lost CNN, let alone other leftists who agree with you on the need to further restrict access to firearms, it is safe to assume that you may be losing the plot.
Grisham is not eligible to run for reelection until 2026 due to the term limit. Unfortunately, residents will have to deal with Grisham until then unless she resigns or is impeached. It’s good to know that her order will not survive legal scrutiny by a court.
