Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Chris Rock verbally attacked his wife in a joke on Wednesday at the Oscars and Will Smith smacked him.
Following a meeting, the board of directors released a statement stating that he had violated Academy Standards of Conduct. The statement included inappropriate physical contact, abusive, or threatening behavior, as well as compromising the integrity and independence of the Academy.
The star was at high risk of being expelled or suspended.
AMPAS also stated that it hasn’t dealt with the incident as it stands now:
We didn’t know how the end would come out. We are not asking Mr. Smith to leave. However, we recognize that things could have been done differently.
It was impossible to imagine. Will seemed to be dreaming and realized it was his nightmare.
He is now regretful.
Variety was notified by the Oscar winner on Friday that they had withheld their acceptance.
He said, “The long list of people that I have hurt includes Chris and his family. ”
“I betrayed Academy’s trust”. “I denied other nominees and winners an opportunity to be honored for their outstanding work”.

“I am committed to doing everything necessary to ensure violence does not overtake reason.”
It seems that there are contradictory accounts regarding the request of the Academy for him to leave.
Variety: [S]ources claim Smith was not asked to leave the organization and Will Packer encouraged him to stay. Rock claims Smith shouldn’t be fired during a GMA interview.
However it happened, the rapper-turned-movie-star went on to accept the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Richard Williams in the film King Richard.
Hollywood King Will seems to be playing the prince role at the moment. He is not a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
